Compact Flourescents

I'm not really an environmental fanatic, but I am sure playing one today! I lvoe CF bulbs. And apparently Wal-Mart is now with me in pushing their adoption. Before you know it, they are going to be insisting on good working conditions for factory workers and paying reasonable wages with benefits...

...Ok, now that I'm done rolling on the floor in hysterical laughter... I don't understand the resistance to these light bulbs. They are a high up front cost but the seem like they last forever. I don't think that I've had one go out yet and I've been using them for nearly 5 years. We have a few places in our house with dimmers so those haven't been switched since they don't work with dimmers but otherwise I try not to use any traditional metal filament bulbs. I don't know what effect this really has on our bottom line but our energy costs are really low, around $250/month combine for gas and electric. The variation from heat to air conditiong is pretty much zero sum for us.

The more I pay attention, the more small things I see that I can do. Like these bulbs. Paying attention to turning lights off. Driving a little slower. Keeping air in my tires. I know almost no one I know does these things and It's frustrating. I don't want to be all preachy or pushing one agenda but this stuff is really easy to make small decreases in use of things and if everyone did it, that a huge decrease.

Comments:
Now being a homeowner, I tend to pay attention to every detail in spending and how to save here and there. I have always had the "responsible for money " gene from my dad, but it has grown with age and added expenses. The CF bulbs I will have to look into, but as far as your list of the little things, I have to laugh. Only because I totally hear what your saying. I turn off a light when I'm not in the room, but my lovely wife and step-daughter feel like everyone in Lawrence, including the air traffic above, need to know we are home by turning every light on in the house at once.

The responsibility with money concept is still pretty new to me. I wish that had been instilled in me a little better while growing up.
