Ethan on Hank
Last weekend my friend Ethan asked about doing some Hank Williams songs for his dad for Father's Day. He came out last night. The intention was like 4 - 5 songs, then we would add some instrumentation. So Ethan got here, the beer started flowing and we set him up in front of some mics. We started with him playing to a click and going back and re-doing songs. After a few beers we jsut let it roll! He was just going through the Hank songbook. Between takes I was playing around with the effects in Pro Tools, I'm missing all my old DX and VST plugins, and we ended up with a healthy amount of slapback on the vocals.
Nick showed up and said, "this needs some really reverby guitar." And it did. So we set up with Ethan singing and playing acoustic, Nick playing a rediculously clicky and reverby guitar and me playing drums with brushes. We did 5 or 6 songs like this and they came out great. I ended up with Nick's guitar panned to the left, the drums panned to the right and the vocals and acoustic right up the center. Everything has a pretty good kiss of compression and it just sounds awesome! Exactly like you think it should.
