When Computers Attack
This is probably not the best place to talk about my studio computer crashing but it happens and I can recover.
The last couple days it's been crashing kind of a random. This install of Windows has been on there for a while now. I knew I had some driver issues but it seemed to be spreading. It only takes a couple hours to reload everything that I need (and all the projects are on a separate drive) but it's a pain. Tracking down and re-installing all the software, drivers and plug-ins. Getting all the settings back how they were. Just a lot of effort. There really isn't a good way to just keep settings for programs since some are in the registry and some are in files and you never really know where everything is.
Maybe it's familiarity but I like the /etc model from the Unix/Linux world. All the configurations (well mostly all) go into this directory so keeping a backup of this can really make re-installation a breeze.
I still haven't figured out what takes Windows so long to install. It's about twice as long as installing SuSE Linux... but SuSE has hundreds of apps installed in there: browsers, office suites, multiple desktop environments, development tools, image programs.
