Email Just Vanishes

I recently heard a documentarian say that with email it's going to be hard to chronicle history. Since email "evaporates" there won't be any treasures left to find like old love letters or dusty journals.

Recently a forum I am on got cracked and the script deleted nearly all of the posts. The last year or so of conversations are just gone. I see hard drives die daily. Terabytes of data at the mercy of a little arm with a magnet stuck on the end. A little friction, a little gravity and it's all gone.

Last night I lost some pictures. Last week I lost some files from a clients recording project. At work we lost a bunch fo our software. One time I lost all of my mp3s. It's not like misplacing your keys or forgetting where you put that book. It's gone.

Comments:
i completely agree and when thinking of whether to start a blog i opted to head to the book store for a bound journal. much better fit for me personally and the journal pages smell much better than the computer screen. i'm also a huge fan of letters and have recently began trying make myself sit down and write letters instead of call. Nostalgia can be a time waste and/or beautiful thing depending on your perspective...RW
