Johnny Switchblade Layed Down Some Tracks
We had one night tracking instruments and another couple hours with some guitar overdubs and vocals. All the guitars were originally tracked with a Hot Rod Deluxe but were replace after Jon saw the ancient... err, sorry vintage, practice amp that Nick left here. Apparently his uncle or grandpa built it from a kit. We plugged it into a tuck and roll Kustom 2x12 cabinet and just cranked the thing. It was perfect for the sound.
Jud came in requesting minimal miking of his kit. That's a rarity in a drummer! I used some spaced pair overheads, an ATM25 outside the kick and an Oktava MK-319 about 10 feet out to add some room. The mix as it stands now has a lot of the room mic in it.
One of the most frustrating things when I was playing in punk bands was getting those huge background vocals. The ganged up punctuations just never had the hit. Well, they wanted some of those and I wanted to make it work. I had them cut the parts three times. One 90 degrees off center of the mic, one straight up and another 90 degrees the other way. I panned them around an they sound awesome. I also kept them back quite a ways from the mic, 6 feet or so, and it helps them sit behind the main vocals a lot better.
