A Sad Upgrade
I bought a new, well new to me at least, mixer a few months ago. It's a mid '80s 16 channel Peavey. It was a huge upgrade from the Behringer mixer I had before and since this thing is huge and has all sorts of lights it looks really cool in the studio. I guess I should mention that it sounds a lot better and doesn't have that harshness that the Behringer had. It seems slower to respond to transients but I like that sound and I think it's had a dramatic effect on the sound of the recordings I've been making. So in all the hustle and bustle of last week it started showing it's age. It's starting to develop some weirdness. I took it apart last Wednesday night and cleaned everything I could. It helped a few of the problems but more have started developing. I'm really heart broken because I love the sound of this mixer but I can't have something possibly flaky hanging around.
So now that the sad part is out of the way the new mixer will expand the studio greatly. The biggest addition will be a move from 8 track to 16 track. This hasn't been an unworkable issue, 8 tracks in at once is not that much of a limitation, but having 16 will open up some possibilities to have some more sonic choices from one performance.
I'm sure I'll make a big deal about the new gear when it gets in but I'm just bummed about the Peavey and needed to share.
